So we left the Walmart parking lot after a jog around the neighborhood and shower to check out Palo Duro Canyon State Park nearby. This place is dubbed as the 'grand canyon of Texas' and I can see why, its 120 miles long, up to 20 miles wide and up to 800 ft deep. It is beautiful with tons of hiking and mountain biking trails. We are kicking ourselves for not having our morning jog here, but alas, we must get to Santa Fe. And if this is a little taste of what we are in for, well we like it!
Juniper berries. Palo Duro means 'hard wood' in Spanish, referring to the juniper and mesquite trees found in this area.
Us at the visitor center overlook of the gorgeous canyon and 'lighthouse rock'. Back to the road!
Since I completely forgot to take a picture of our lovely friends, Leah and Don, that we met once before on a wilderness medicine trip to Costa Rica, I had to dig into my archives for a pic. They graciously hosted us for two days in their home in the Santa Fe hills. We had a lot of laughs and it was great catching up! 'Til next time :)
Classic New Mexican food, mmm shredded beef burrito special, we will both take that! At Tia Sofia's.
Typical Santa Fe architecture, adobe. We are not in the midwest anymore!
Ryan doing the maze outside of St Francis of Assissi Basilica. I'm dizzy just watching him :)
Me imitating art, could be yours for the bargain price of... 1 billion dollars, only kidding, probably just $46,000 or something crazy like that! Canyon Road in Santa Fe seems to be the mecca for all things art. We perused for a while wondering how anyone could afford things like this...Afterward, the four us had awesome tapas at El Farol for dinner.
Total Miles in 2 days: 231 (a new record low for us)
Total Gas money: $143.21 (I like that)
