After a lovely night at the Holiday Inn Express in Truth or Consequences, NM...one might wonder, now that is a weird name for a town?!? It used to be called Hot Springs until 1950, when a TV show, called Truth or Consequences announced it would host the show from any town that would change its name to the name of their TV show. Hot Springs won and the rest is history.
Because of the new-ish name, we had no idea this town was known for its hot springs until we saw a bunch of brochures in the hotel lobby. After we soaked in 107 degree mineral water for 1 hour at the bargain price of $7.50, I felt like I just finished yoga class. Om..... HIGHLY recommend Riverbend Hot Springs.
This is a drawing is at Petroglygh National Monument in Albuquerque. We had a hard time figuring out what was graffiti and what was real native or early Spanish settler "pecking" on the rocks. I'll let you decide...
This one looks like a jackalope. Anyone remember America's Funniest Home Videos? "fast as fast can be, you'll never catch me". I am dating myself..
At the advice of a man we met at the hot springs this morning, we took a little scenic highway, from Albuquerque back to Santa Fe, called 14 or the Turquoise Trail. We slowed down to take a picture of the rainbow and as we rounded a bend, a black bear was crossing the road. Worth the price of admission right there! Amazing.
We grabbed a beverage at this little town called Madrid. It was a company town for mining coal, but went out of business after World War II, so the town became a ghost town until the 1970's when hippies, artists and old war vets came moved in. Its pretty eclectic with a mining museum, a pub with live music all the time and a bunch of little shops. My favorite was the pub souvenir t-shirt, it said: "Madrid, there is no town drunk, we all take turns."
Total Miles: 256
