Day 16 Run for the Wall

May 17, 2013

Run for the Wall is an organization that helps guide thousands of veterans riding their motorcycles across the country in 9 days to the final destination of the Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. Eagle Nest area happens to be a stop along the central route. We stuck around this little town one last day to witness 500+ veterans on motorcycles come through town and serve them up some food and drink. It was pretty cool.

First we took a little ride of our own, on our mountain bikes. We had a really nice just over 6 mile ride along the Rio Grande del Rancho trail.

What you just missed before this shot was me falling off my bike because I couldn't get my feet clipped out fast enough (for the second time). Still smiling though. Only one more bruise on the right forearm today to add to the list :)

We cheered on the hundreds of bikers flooding into the Vets Memorial State Park. We hung out with our camp neighbors, Mary and Terry (who is also a Vietnam vet) from Kansas City.

We made it over to the senior center where they were serving up a massive free dinner for the riders and anyone involved. We shook hands, welcomed, cleaned up plates and served drinks. I even gave some hugs.

Total miles: probably about 60
Gas: $16.70
Fun facts: Smith's grocery store in NM is just like Kroger in OH, ahhh it feels like home when we walk in to shop, same set up, same brands. Our Kroger card works there and they have cheap gas!

P.S. I added a new gadget on the blog. You can enter your email on top and hit submit. This will send you and email when I publish a new entry. It works pretty well, although there is a bit of a delay, I tried it out on myself yesterday.
