Day 11 and 12 Santa Fe to Eagle Nest

May 12-13, 2013

After an overnight stay back at Leah and Don's, catching up on laundry, car wash and picking up the beast, we are on our way to Taos area, in northern New Mexico. We settled on a campground with full hookups in Eagle Nest, a tiny town along the 'enchanted circle' which is a scenic road made up of a bunch of little ski towns and some really picturesque wilderness. Eagle Nest is in a valley surrounded by the southern Rockies, several are still snow capped. Elevation here is about 8200 ft, that should make for an interesting morning run! We will really be able to use this travel trailer of ours like we planned here.

That means some home cooked meals. Peach pork chops, soup and salad for the first night. Shout out to Jarrod and Christi Williams-its a great flavor combo :)

After a struggling through a morning run, we did the rest of the enchanted circle drive in our QX. It is very beautiful with lots of ponderosa pines and little streams. The Rio Grande also runs through this area. It carves a steep and fairly inaccessible gorge in some areas.

Boy that is a long way down! I was examining the rocks below and saw a high chair and a crutch. Hope there were no people attached to those items when they got tossed.

Ryan could hardly control his anticipation of getting out on the water. We put in our duckies (inflatable kayaks) on the Rio Grande today at this spot.

It was about a 5-6 mile course from Quartzite to County Line access areas. Not quite the narrow deep gorge where the bridge was. The water level is pretty low. You can see a little rapid behind Ryan.

It took us just over an hour to complete. It was fun, pretty easy to navigate, but enough whitewater and some tight spots to get my heart rate up a few times :)

Great day today and as an a bonus, we saw tons of Elk on the way back to our little temporary home at Golden Eagle RV Campground.

Total Miles:
100
New goal: to see a mountain lion (from a distance)
